Is a Coton de Tulear puppy right for your family?

Conformation Showing

The Coton de Tulear is a rare breed and myself, Gabbie Carter, Nevada (Junior Handler) and some of my wonderful forever families take part in the Conformation Showing.

While our original breeding dogs were already proven on the international circuits, Cotonrun has produced many Australian champions, including Sippin on Rose’.

The Dream Team – Sylvia and Meant To Be

For 20 years expert Obedience and Tricks handler, Melbourne based, Sylvia Van Doorn has been working with dogs enriching the lives of pets and their families/handlers.

Sylvia started in the obedience field because she had a dog exhibiting dominance aggressive behaviour towards any handler.

Today Sylvia’s passion and drive sees her working with rescue ‘naughty but nice’ dogs, engaging them in obedience and tricks to build their confidence and optimism, enabling them to have enriching lives with their new families.

Sylvia’s skill set and experience has seen her train obedience dogs to Obedience Grand Champion levels and Tricks dogs to Trick Dog Champion levels.

I was overjoyed in Sylvia choosing the Coton de Tulear for her next challenge towards perfection.

Sylvia and Meant To Be’s (Ciella) journey began in 2018 at 8-weeks and has already seen amazing results.

I love the videos showing what my breed is capable of, in the right hands, at such a young age. Sylvia refers to their achievements as ‘building their relationship bank’.

As a professional she promotes the philosophy the more you pay in your relationship bank the more you get out and believes training is about having fun with her dogs making it an enriching experience as opposed to hard work.

Seeing such wonderful results clearly Sylvia and Ciella are building an incredible loving relationship bank.

Having already earned her Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert Trick Dog titles, amazing! The dream team are undertaking Dancing with Dogs and Sylvia is using Ciella as a demonstration dog for Obedience training.

When I received Sylvia’s phone call enquiring about a Coton de Tulear puppy I thought there’s definitely an angel looking after Cotonrun and I’m very grateful to Sylvia for her dedication, enthusiasm and love of Ciella.

Thank you, Sylvia, I’m blessed being able to share and celebrate this journey with you and Ciella.

Sylvia Van Doorn

Congratulations to Sylia and Ciella. Ciella has reached the highest level of Trick training gaining her Trick Dog Champion Title under 6 months of age, an amazing achievement!

Pet Assistance Trainer and National Certifier

Ricky Lawson

FETCH Assistance Dogs Inc

ABN: 50 384 961 465

WESTPAC BSB: 034189 A/C: 454107

Founder of FETCH Assistance Dogs (Friends Eager To Come Help), Ricky Lawson has a long history of training Assistance Animals for Returned Service personnel, like himself.

Retired 2010, injured in service, Ricky worked for many agencies involved with assistance animal training before creating his own non-profit organisation, with his philosophy on training assistance animals.

FETCH works with the owner and animal, often donated to Ricky from breeders and shelters, to help returning service personnel to have some sort of life and meaning, many of them suffering phycological or other disabilities and conditions.

Since FETCH’s inception Ricky expanded his organisation to include front-line personnel and civilians. Ricky trains handlers on how to train their animals to their circumstances.

Ricky’s life was turned around when he received Hoover in 2013. Ricky describes himself as having been 10-foot tall and bullet proof until his forced retirement from the military, due to his medical conditions, he became a recluse and very depressed suffering severe anxiety, nightmares and vulnerability.

Hoover has made it possible for Ricky to help many people improve their quality of life.

Cotonrun is happy to support Ricky’s wonderful work and our dear Grace will be trained to assist a serving member’s daughter and family alike, who are suffering due to external circumstances.

If you would like to support Ricky’s initiative you can become a member/social member for $50.00 per annum or make a donation, and if your interested you could join Ricky’s training classes throughout Australia.

Australian Coton de Tulear Judging Standard

In Australia the Coton de Tulear is judged according to the FCI standard. Mr Ian Rasmussen prepared the Australian breed standard for the Australian National Kennel Club (ANKC).

However, there is more to judging this rare breed than outlined in the standard. To assist with judging myself and my Hungarian breeder, Ferenc Remenyi, of Carbonebianco Kennel, prepared a step-by-step guide on how today’s FCI and Coton Speciality Judges judge the Coton de Tulear.

There is also a list of Coton de Tulear Speciality Judges if anyone is overseas and wanting to talk with a knowledge judge.

Further, there is an historic to current day list of best practice European Coton de Tulear breeders, a guide to knowing what to expect from Coton de Tulears with these linages.
